Luis Rubiales, president of the Spanish Football Federation, and Gerard Pique, a Barcelona center-back, devised a strategy to persuade all parties concerned that the Supercopa de Espana should be shifted from August to January.

Among them was David Aganzo, president of the Spanish Footballers' Association (AFE), whose approval was required for such a significant alteration.
According to El Confidencial, Rubiales and Pique persuaded Lionel Messi to submit a video declaring his support for the AFE amid their battle with another footballers' organization, Futbolistas ON, in order to win Aganzo's backing.

(April 10, 2019) Rubiales: "The calendar proposal I received came from AFE and LaLiga, and now we're going to present a new one with only minor changes. I believe that someone other than you, so that it is not tied to you, should speak with David Aganzo and tell him, "Hey dude, this has to happen. This is great." We don't want to compete in the Copa del Rey's first two rounds. It's beneficial to us.' Whatever. Consider how and who could be able to contact David from Barcelona, or possibly Real Madrid. But, of course, we can't make a mistake because if we say it to someone and they don't want to. We'll think about it and mull it over because who knows, maybe someone will contact David Aganzo tomorrow? Is it okay if we meet tomorrow, over the weekend, or on Monday? I'll give you a hug, man."
Pique (April 10, 2019): "Aganzo has been asking me for days for a video supporting the AFE because obviously, it's these individuals from Futbolistas ON, the other association that [LaLiga president Javier] Tebas is forming... and he's asking me for a video. 'Man, listen, go on with the Federation's calendar and so on... and I'll send you the footage,' I could tell him. Now I'll email you the video', you know, with the excuse. And then I'll give him the video and tell him, "Listen, let's go through with the Federation; it's f***ing fantastic." I'm not sure what it is. Let's hear what he has to say. We also have Leo [Messi] with us; he'll send him a video and everything, so we could claim it's a message from all the captains from Barcelona."
(April 10, 2019) Rubiales: "So, give him a little nudge. 'Look, I'm going to email you my footage, as well as Leo's, and so on,' don't press him. 'How's the Federation thing doing, by the way?' Allow him to explain the calendar to you. When he explains the schedule to you, you may tell him, 'Ah, well, man, I don't think there's any problem, you have to go for the Federation's calendar, man, and plus, Tebas, we already know what he wants, he's f**king you over with Futbolistas ON.' How are we going to realize that you then help Tebas if you want our help, man?' Something along those lines..."
